Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Shady Grove Medical Center Full Time

Shady Grove Medical Center seeks to hire an experienced Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (COO) who will embrace our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing.

Reporting to the President of Shady Grove Medical Center (SGMC), the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as a mission-driven, operational leader responsible for advancing the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. As part of Adventist HealthCare’s commitment to whole-person healing, the COO will lead with a deep understanding of High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles to ensure consistently exceptional outcomes in a dynamic, high-acuity environment.

The COO will oversee ancillary and support services and play a critical role in designing and executing integrated clinical and operational strategies that support both immediate and long-term priorities. This executive will cultivate a culture of safety, accountability, and collaboration aligned with Adventist HealthCare’s faith-based values and dedication to service excellence.

As a Vice President/Chief Operating Officer you will:

• Oversee and maintain a sensitivity to operations through rigorous monitoring of frontline performance, system effectiveness, and real-time feedback loops.
• Encourage reluctance to simplify, ensuring that operational and clinical challenges are approached with thoughtful, data-driven analysis.
• Collaborate with other top executives to establish strategic plans and objectives for the hospital and promoting deference to expertise, empowering the most knowledgeable team members—regardless of role or title—to contribute to problem-solving and decision-making.
• Ensure that the hospital complies with all local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
• Monitor the hospital’s performance and implement changes as necessary to improve performance and fostering a culture of preoccupation with failure, treating near misses and safety events as critical learning opportunities.
• Maintain sensitivity to operations through rigorous monitoring of frontline performance, including hiring, training system effectiveness, and real-time feedback loops.
• Drive performance improvement initiatives that elevate patient safety, clinical outcomes, and patient experience, while optimizing efficiency and resource utilization.
• Perform other functions related to the office of the COO or as may be requested by the CEO or the Board.
• Keep abreast of trends and changes in the healthcare industry and adapt strategies as necessary.
• Develop and manage the hospital’s budget, in collaboration with the CFO
• Foster a culture of preoccupation with failure, treating near misses and safety events as critical learning opportunities.
• All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include:

• Master’s degree in Business or Healthcare Administration is required
• 7 years’ operations experience (preferred)
• 10 years’ healthcare experience, hospital experience preferred
• 7 years or more supervisory experience
• Skilled in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating a wide variety of activities.

• Team oriented with the ability to partner across all functions within the organization.

• Knowledge of principles and practices of management and administration, governmental policy, financial analysis, project management, and personnel management.

• Strong leadership, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage a large staff and oversee a large, complex organization.
• Proficient in PC skills in a Window environment (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint at a minimum) and email programs.
• Deep understanding of HRO principles, Lean/Six Sigma methodologies, and other performance improvement frameworks.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of management and administration, governmental policy, financial analysis, project management, and personnel management
• Team oriented with the ability to partner across all functions within the organization.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage financial budgets and planning at an entity level.
• Ability to work independently and handle a multitask environment.
• Proven experience building high-functioning teams and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Education:
Master’s Degree in Business or Healthcare Administration is required

Pay Range:
$249,144.83 – $373,717.24

If the salary range is listed as $0 or if the position is Per Diem (with a fixed rate), salary discussions will take place during the screening process.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), this position is classified as:
