Chief Executive Officer Full Time

Gem-A is the world’s longest-established gemmological education and membership institution. Our prestigious Gemmology and Diamond Diplomas are globally recognised as qualifications of the highest standard and status. The Gemmology Diploma is taught in five languages in more than 19 countries around the world, is the direct descendant of the gem course that was proposed for the UK jewellery trade in 1908.

After eight years at the helm our incumbent Chief Executive has announced their departure, they are leaving Gem-A in a positive place allowing our new Chief Executive to capitalise on a sustainable and stable organisation. We would like our new Chief Executive to help shape and realise our strategic vision for the future. Gem-A are recruiting a new Chief Executive to lead our work the impact of which will span continents and educate thousands of the next generation of gem and jewellery enthusiasts and professionals.

As the Chief Executive, you will take responsibility for:

• Developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy for Gem-A.
• The production of P&Ls and forecasts for approval from the finance committee in line with the approved strategic plan.
• Executing on behalf of the Association all written contracts and agreements, which have been reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors/ Trustees.
• Ensuring the Board are aware of risks and mitigations as appropriate, and that they receive timely, relevant and well-prepared information to enable them to make informed decisions.
• Routinely assessing the current validity of Gem-A educational content, its design and delivery.
• Understanding and executing marketing and sales strategy development.
• Managing sales channels for the company’s educational products or services.
• Demonstrating leadership and driving team success through modelled high standards of performance and implementing ‘best practice’ initiatives

To qualify as the Chief Executive, you must have demonstrable experience of:

• Working in a similar management role within a professional body, commercial training provider or professional educational organisation.
• Growing a complex project or organisation from inception to maturity.
• Successful income generation within a non-profit environment, including developing partnerships and sponsorships.
• Demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills, writing and speaking to a variety of audiences, including delivering talks and presentations at academic conferences, events and handling media.
• Strong commercial and financial awareness.
• Co-creating organisational culture; supporting and developing staff.
• Working within nonprofit charity or educational body with strong governance requirements with not-for-profit Board of Trustees.
• Managing across cultures and leading international business activities undertaken.
